== Latar belakang ==
Dari tahun 1934 sampai 1941 Xinjiang berada di bawah pengaruh Uni Soviet. Panglima perang lokal Sheng Shicai bergantung pada Uni Soviet untuk dukungan militer dan perdagangan. Pasukan Soviet memasuki Xinjiang dua kali, pada tahun 1934 dan 1937, untuk jangka waktu terbatas untuk memberikan dukungan militer langsung kepada rezim Sheng Shicai.
