Peran DM  adalah  mengisi kesenjangan antara  [[infanteri]] reguler dan [[penembak runduk]], biasanya digunakan pada rentang 250–600 m (273.4-656.17 yard).DMR   telah dikembangkan dengan matang.
 
Senapan ini harus efektif, dalam hal akurasi dan terminal balistik, di rentang yang melebihi  [[senapan serbu]]  biasa (250 m atau kurang), dan [[senapan tempur]], (500 m), tetapi tidak memerlukan mencapai jarak khusus [[senapan runduk]]  (biasanya digunakan untuk target-target yang berkisar antara 500 m - 2 km).
 
Namun, DMR sering berbagi beberapa karakteristik dasar dengan senapan runduk bila dibandingkan dengan senjata yang dibawa oleh orang lain di unit DM. Kebanyakan senapan penembak jitu didasarkan pada senapan serbu yang saat ini dikeluarkan oleh sebuah negara militer, atau pada senapan tempur yang sebelumnya dikeluarkan. Senapan tempur semi-otomatis atau senapan otomatis penuh yang menembakkan 7.62 mm NATO atau mirip pada daya putaran  penuh. Contoh klasik termasuk [[M14 (senapan)|M14]], [[FN FAL (senapan)|FN FAL]], [[AR-10]] dan [[Heckler & Koch G3]]. Senapan ini sebagian besar digantikan oleh [[senapan serbu]]  yang menembakkan katrij [[5,56 × 45 mm NATO|5.56 mm NATO]]  selama tahun 1980-an dan 1990-an.

=== Penglihatan ===
Semua   akan memiliki beberapa jenis pemandangan optikal dengan perbesaran yang lebih tinggi dari tingkat standar senapan. Sebagai contoh, [[Senapan Penembak jitu Angkatan Darat Amerika Serikat|SDM-R]]  yang dikeluarkan untuk Tentara Amerika Serikat dilengkapi dengan Trijicon 4× ACOG, sedangkan karabin M4 standar dilengkapi denga  Aimpoint CompM2 atau CompM4  tanpa pembesaran. Kadang-kadang, sistem penglihatan akan menjadi satu-satunya perbedaan antara senapan standar dan senapan khusus penembak jitu, seperti halnya dengan F88S DMR yang dikeluarkan untuk Tentara Australia.
 
Senapan runduk bahkan sering   memiliki perbesaran yang lebih besar dari senapan khusus penembak jitu, misalnya, [[M110 Semi-Automatic Sniper System|M110 SASS]] digunakan oleh angkatan Darat Amerika Serikat, dilengkapi dengan Leupold 3.5-10× lingkup variabel-power. Dalam beberapa kasus, senapan penembak jitu akan memiliki laras lebih panjang dari senapan standar. Namun, hal ini tidak benar secara universal. Bahkan, hingga sampai saat ini,senapan [[M-16 (senapan)|M16A4]]  masih menggunakan laras standar di seluruh Korps Marinir Amerika Serikat. Laras di [[Senapan multiguna Spesial Mk 12|Mk 12 Senapan Tujuan Khusus]], senapan yang digunakan saat ini oleh regu penembak jitu di USMC, hanya panjang 500 mm (18 inci) -50 mm (dua inci) lebih pendek dari laras pada senapan standar. Juga, beberapa senapan, seperti F88S Austeyr, memiliki laras yang sama panjangnya dengan senapan pelayanan standar. FD-200 memiliki laras yang bisa diatur akurasinya, juga ditemukan di senapan  khusus penembak jitu.
