Pada serangan ini, tiga bom Tallboy yang dilepaskan dari pesawat mengenai bagian tengah Tirpitz kemudian meledakkannya. Setelah itu, kapal perang Jerman yang terakhir ini mulai miring dan tenggelam bersama 1000 orang awaknya. Sebanyak 700 orang awaknya berhasil diselamatkan.
