Metis ditemukan pada tahun 1979 dalam gambar yang diambil oleh ''[[Voyager 1]]'', dan dinamai pada tahun 1983 berdasarkan istri pertama Zeus, [[Metis (mitologi)|Metis]]. Pengamatan tambahan dilakukan pada awal tahun 1996 dan bulan September 2003 oleh [[Galileo (wahana antariksa)|pesawat ''Galileo'']] yang mengambil foto dari permukaan satelit tersebut.
Metis [[Penguncian pasang surut|terkunci secara pasang surut]] dengan [[Jupiter]], dan bentuknya sangat asimetris, dengan salah satu diameternya memiliki panjang dua kali lipat dibanding diameter terpendeknya. Metis juga dikenal sebagai satu dari dua satelit yang mengorbit Jupiter dalam waktu yang lebih pendek daripada hari Jupiter (waktu yang dibutuhkan Jupiter untuk berotasi sekali). Satelit lainnya, yaitu [[Adrastea (satelit)|Adrastea]].
