Britania Raya disebut Raya untuk membedakannya dengan Britania yang lain yaitu ''région'' [[Bretagne]] di [[Prancis]]. Nama Britania Raya berasal dari [[bahasa Prancis]] ''Grand-Bretagne''. Dan karena [[bahasa resmi]] pemerintahan Inggris mulai dari tahun [[1066]] adalah bahasa Prancis, maka nama ini dipakai terus sampai [[bahasa Inggris]] menjadi bahasa resmi kembali. Oleh para sejarawan nama "Bretayne the grete" dipakai pada tahun [[1338]]. Namun secara resmi nama ini baru dipakai oleh raja [[James I dari Inggris|James I]] (''James VI of Scots and I of England and Ireland'') pada [[20 Oktober]] [[1604]]. Kala itu ia menyatakan sumpah bahwa ia adalah "Raja Britania Raya" dan tidak hanya "Skotlandia" dan "Inggris" saja sebab Wales juga termasuk wilayahnya.
