Medali ini pertama kali diberikan pada tahun 1877 kepada Robert Bunsen dan Gustav Kirchhoff, atas jasanya menemukan analisis spektrum,<ref name="rs"/> dan sejak saat itu sudah 131 kali penghargaan ini diadakan.<ref name="rs"/> Medali ini diberikan setiap tahun tanpa ada yang terlewatkan tiap tahunnya.
