== Sejarah ==
United Launch Alliance meneruskan pengelolaan keluarga roket peluncur Atlas V dan Delta IV ketika perusahaan itu dibentuk pada 2006. Kedua roket tersebut diterbangkan pertama kali pada tahun 2002.{{Butuh rujukan|date=July 2019}}
Pada awal 2014, sudah jelas bahwa ULA harus mengembangkan roket peluncur baru untuk menggantikan armada yang sudah ada. Selain itu, pendorong Atlas V menggunakan mesin [[RD-180]] Rusia yang memicur kritik politis terutama saat krisis Ukraina 2014. Mengandalkan perangkat keras asing untuk meluncurkan pesawat ruang angkasa keamanan nasional yang kritis juga dipandang kontroversial dan tidak diinginkan.
