Originally set for a December, 2014 release, the film was released in July, 2015 to mixed reviews. While co-director Coffin reprised his role of the Minions, namely Kevin, Stuart and Bob, who were the centre of the film's storyline, other cast members included [[Sandra Bullock]] as female supervillain, Scarlet Overkill, [[John Hamm]] as her husband Herb, [[Allison Janney]] and [[Michael Keaton]] as the Madge and Walter Nelson, [[Jennifer Saunders]] as [[Queen Elizabeth II]] and narrated by [[Geoffrey Rush]].
In January 2017, almost two years on following the film's box office success, a sequel was in development. With director Coffin and Carell reprising their roles, new cast members include [[Taraji P. Henson]], [[Michelle Yeoh]], [[RZA]], [[Jean-Claude Van Damme]], [[Lucy Lawless]], [[Dolph Lundgren]], [[Danny Trejo]] and [[Alan Arkin]]. Brand and Andrews will be returning in the film as Dr. Nefario and Gru's mother. Originally set for July 3, 2020, the film was postponed to July 2, 2021, being pushed back recorded to June 30, 2022.
