Ide penamaan industri film Hindi sebagai ''Bollywood'' berasal dari [[sinema Benggala Barat]] yang disebut ''[[Tollywood]]''. Istilah ''Tollywood'' yang merupakan peniru nama Hollywood yang pertama, sudah dipakai untuk [[sinema Benggala|industri film Benggala]] sejak 1932. Tollywood yang dulunya merupakan pusat [[sinema India]], berpusat di selatan Kolkata, di tempat yang bernama [[Tollygunge]] (secara kebetulan namanya mirip Hollywood).
