== Ringkasan kejuaraan ==
Musim ini adalah yang pertama dari 'formula 3 liter', yang membuat kapasitas mesin maksimum menjadi dua kali lipat dari musim sebelumnya. Konstruktor Inggris terpaksa mencari tempat lain setelah Climax menarik diri dari balapan. Ferrari tampaknya dipersiapkan dengan baik seperti pada tahun 1961, tetapi John Surtees, setelah memenangkan Grand Prix Belgia, meninggalkan tim setelah perselisihan di Le Mans untuk bergabung dengan Cooper. Bruce McLaren (Bruce McLaren Motor Racing, yang kemudian menjadi tim McLaren yang sukses, satu-satunya tim dari tahun 1966 selain Ferrari yang masih berada di Formula Satu pada tahun 2021) dan Dan Gurney (Anglo American Racers) meniru Brabham dengan membangun mobil mereka sendiri, meskipun dengan sedikit keberhasilan awal.
