Periode ini dimulai sejak pembentukan [[Bumi]] (sekitar 4.54 miliar tahun lalu) hingga berakhirnya pada kurang lebih 3.8 miliar tahun yang lalu, walaupun waktu berakhir ini bervariasi menurut sumber-sumber yang berbeda.
