Setelah beban gandar lintas utara Jawa ditingkatkan menjadi 15 ton dan di Sumatra menjadi 18 ton, maka [[lokomotif BB203]] berangsur-angsur diubah menjadi CC201 dengan menambah satu motor traksi di bagian tengah masing-masing bogie, serta disetel sehingga daya mesinnya mencapai 1.950 hp.{{Sfn|Hartono A.S.|2012|p=111}}
