Manchester City mendominasi jalannya pertandingan sejak awal terllihat dari ''ball possession'' dan jumlah tembakan. Namun kesigapan [[Thomas Sørensen]] di bawah mistar Stoke City memaksakan skor kacamata mengakhiri babak pertama. Stoke mulai bangkit setelah jeda namun gagal mencetak gol lewat satu-satunya ''shot on target'' pada menit 62, yang berhasil diselamatkan oleh [[Joe Hart]] setelah menghadapi situasi satu lawan satu dengan [[Kenwyne Jones]]. Pada menit 74, gelandang Manchester City, [[Yaya Touré]] menendang dengan keras bola liar di area penalti Stoke City dan berhasil menembus jala Sørensen dan memberikan keunggulan bagi Manchester City. Stoke gagal mencetak gol penyeimbang di sisa pertandingan dan pertandingan berakhir dengan skor 1–0. Final pada tahun 2011 kali ini menghadapi masalah penjadwalan karena berbenturan dengan jadwal [[Liga Utama Inggris|liga]], pertama kalinya sejak 1934. Menurut aturan UEFA, stadion penyelenggara final tidak boleh digunakan untuk pertandingan apapun sejak dua pekan sebelum final. Maka dari itu, jadwal final Piala FA harus dimajukan, dan untuk pertama kalinya sejak tahun 1989, final Piala FA diselenggarakan sebelum musim liga-liga di Inggris usai.

Beberapa pertandingan di Liga Primer pun akhirnya dijadwal ulang guna menghindari benturan jadwal dengan final.
