Ong terdaftar sebagai prajurit [[Angkatan Bersenjata Singapura]] pada Januari 1994 dan dilantik sebagai perwira [[infanteri]] pada bulan Oktober di tahun yang sama.
Ong pernah menduduki sejumlah jabatan diantaranya sebagai Komandan [[:en:Guards (Singapore Army)|Brigade Infanteri ke-7 Singapura]] pada tahun 2010 hingga tahun 2011 dan kemudian pernah menjabat sebagai Kepala Departemen Rencana Bersama dan Transformasi.
