Selain menjabat sebagai Letnan Komandan di Pasukan Cadangan Angkatan Laut Amerika Serikat, ia dipilih oleh Presiden Theodore Roosevelt untuk menemani pelayaran Great White Fleet pada tahun 1907 untuk mendokumentasikan perjalanan tersebut.
