Kerusuhan tersebut dipicu oleh korupsi, masalah ekonomi, termasuk kekurangan pangan dan pengangguran massal. Kerusuhan ini akhirnya berujung pada [[Kejatuhan Soeharto|pengunduran diri]] [[Presiden Indonesia|Presiden]] [[Soeharto]] dan jatuhnya pemerintahan [[Orde Baru]] yang telah berkuasa selama 32 tahun.
