Sebagai putra pejabat [[Dinasti Qing|Qing]] yang kemudian menjadi aktor dan pengusaha sukses, ia memiliki latar belakang militer dan pernah terlibat dalam gerakan revolusioner melawan [[dinasti Qing]]. Setelah [[revolusi 1911]], ia memutuskan untuk meninggalkan dunia militer dan pindah ke Shanghai untuk mengejar minat seninya di bidang teater.
