Di bagian awal film, diceritakan bagaimana Elizabeth
Kecantikan Elizabeth membuat Will jatuh hati padanya.
Twelve-year-old Elizabeth Swann met a young Will Turner when he was rescued from a ship wreck. She and her father, Governor Weatherby Swann, were en route to Port Royal in the Caribbean. Eight years later, the independent-minded Elizabeth secretly yearns for freedom and fantasizes about pirates and life at sea. She and Will, who is now a blacksmith's apprentice, have formed a cordial friendship, although Will secretly loves her. Commodore James Norrington, a good and honorable Royal Navy officer, proposes to Elizabeth, but she faints and falls off the fort's wall and into the bay before answering. Meanwhile, pirate Captain Jack Sparrow arrives in Port Royal to commandeer a ship. While attempting to con the two marines guarding the HMS Interceptor, he sees Elizabeth fall. Sparrow saves her, but he is captured and jailed for piracy. That night, the Black Pearl, a pirate ship commanded by Captain Barbossa, raids Port Royal. Elizabeth is abducted because she claims her last name is "Turner" and possesses a gold medallion. The same medallion she took from Will Turner that was sent to him by his father years before. Barbossa believes it and Turner blood will break an ancient Aztec curse they're under. Using parley, Elizabeth negotiates with Barbossa to leave Port Royal in exchange for the medallion. Barbossa agrees but keeps her captive when she fails to bargain her own release. He later tells Elizabeth about the curse and reveals their true form in the moonlight—they are undead skeletons.
Di Tortuga, mereka merekrut beberapa kru dengan bantuan Gibbs. Will sempat mencuri dengar rencana Jack untuk mendapatkan kembali Black Pearl dengan memanfaatkan Will. Will berhasil...
On Tortuga, they recruit a crew with help from Gibbs. Will overhears Jack's plan to use him to get back the Pearl. They head for Isla de Muerta, knowing Barbossa will go there to break the curse. In hot pursuit is Commodore Norrington aboard the Dauntless. At the island, Will and Jack sneak inside a cave where a ritual is underway. Barbossa becomes enraged when he discovers Elizabeth is not Bootstrap's child, and the curse is still in effect. Will rescues Elizabeth, who grabs the coin, but distrusting the eccentric pirate, Will leaves Sparrow unconscious in the cave. Believing Jack fell behind, Gibbs sets sail. Barbossa pursues the Interceptor, quickly overtaking her. After a fierce battle, the Interceptor is sunk and the crew is captured. Will reveals his identity. Unless the crew is released, he threatens to shoot himself while falling overboard, rendering him useless for breaking the curse. Barbossa complies, but because Will failed to specify when or where, the crafty pirate maroons Jack and Elizabeth. Elizabeth takes action and burns a cache of smuggler's rum to create a huge smoke signal that is spotted by Commodore Norrington. Aboard Dauntless, Elizabeth convinces Norrington to save Will by impulsively accepting his previous marriage proposal, telling him it would be her wedding present. She says nothing about the curse, however.
