Versi asal lagu tersebut adalah dalam [[bahasa Perancis]] dan diciptakan oleh [[Eugène Pottier]] pada tahun 1871. Lagunya digubah oleh [[Pierre Degeyter]] pada tahun 1888. Lagu ini sudah diterjemahkan ke dalam berbagai bahasa di dunia. Internationale yang dinyanyikan adalah bukan saja oleh komunis tetapi juga (di banyak negara) oleh kelompok sosialis, [[sosial demokrat]], serta [[anarkis]].
