Pada 4 Maret 1776, tentara dari [[Pasukan Kontinental]] di bawah komando [[George Washington]] menduduki [[Dorchester Heights]], perbukitan rendah dengan pemandangan menghadap [[Boston]] dan [[Boston Harbor|pelabuhannya]] dan menempatkan [[meriam]] kuat di sana. Jenderal [[William Howe, 5th Viscount Howe|William Howe]], komandan pasukan Britania yang menduduki kota, mempertimbangkan aksi perlawanan karena meriam tersebut mengancam kota dan kapal-kapal militer di pelabuhan. Setelah badai salju menggagalkan eksekusi rencananya, Howe memutuskan untuk menarik diri dari kota.
