Nama Erasmus Universitas baru dipakai pada tahun 1973. Namun Universitas ini sudah berdiri sejak tahun 1913 dengan nama Nederlandsche Handels-Hoogeschool. Pada waktu itu hanya ilmu ekonomi yang diajarkan.
Universitas Erasmus Rotterdam adalah salah satu universitas ilmu ekonomi dan management terbaik di Eropa. Bahkan salah seorang professor meraih Hadiah Nobel untuk ilmu Ekonomi yaitu [[Prof dr. Jan Tinbergen]].

The School of Management is ranked by the [[Financial Times]] as the 7th best [[MBA]] programme in Europe and 29th in the World.
The School of Economics is ranked as the 24th best [[Economics]] department in the world. Furthermore, the Erasmus MC (the university medical center) is ranked by [[The Scientist]] as the 5th best of the top 15 medical institutions outside the United States (ranking 2004).
Erasmus University has achieved accreditation from the three international accrediting bodies of management education; [[AMBA]], [[EQUIS]], and [[AACSB]]. Only a handful of [[List of business schools in Europe|business schools]] in the world have acquired triple accreditation, although it should be noted that many schools have a policy of not applying for multiple accreditations.
