Kata "cakra" berasal dari [[bahasa Sansekerta]] चक्र yang berarti "[[roda]]" atau "[[lingkaran]]" (juga kata-kata yang terkait dengan kedua kata tersebut), dan kadang-kadang juga merujuk kepada "roda kehidupan". Beberapa sumber tradisional menyebutkan ada lima atau tujuh cakra, yang lainnya menyebutkan delapan.
