Kondisi fisiknya yang tak proporsional membuatnya larut dalam kecanduan alkohol. Awalnya hanya bir dan anggur, namun lama kelamaan, ia mulai meminum alkohol yang lebih keras. Kesehatannya terus memburuk sehingga terjangkit sipilis sehingga perlu dirawat di sanatorium menjelang akhir hidupnya.
