Album ini dirilis pada 22 November 1963, oleh Parlophone records, direkam selang empat bulan setelah rilis album debut the Beatles '[[Please Please Me]]'. Album ini berisikan delapan komposisi asli (tujuh komposisi oleh Lennon–McCartney dan "Don't Bother Me", komposisi pertama [[George Harrison]] yang dirilis dalam album the Beatles) dan enam lagu komposisi milik orang lain (sebagian besar dari musik jenis Motown dan hit-hit R&B). Sebagian besar lagu-lagu dalam album ini dirilis di Amerika Serikat oleh Capitol Records dalam album Meet the Beatles! pada 20 Januari 1964; Lagu-lagu yang lain dimasukkan ke dalam album the Beatles berikutnya versi Amerika sebagai The Beatles' Second Album.
