Yiruma mempunyai dua kewarganegaraan, [[Inggris]] dan [[Korea Selatan|Korea]], tapi pada bulan Juni [[2006]] dia menanggalkan kewarganegaraan Inggris. Yiruma mulai belajar memainkan piano sejak berumur 5 tahun. Pada tahun [[1988]] ia pindah ke [[Inggris]] sekolah musik Purcell. Pada bulan Desember dia berpartisipasi dalam penggarapan album ''The Musicians of Purcell (Decca)''. Menyelesaikan pendidikan di Purcell Specialist Music School ([[London]]) pada bulan [[Juli]] [[1997]]. Kemudian Yiruma melanjutkan pendidikannya dengan menyelesaikan komposisi utama di King's College [[London]] pada bulan Juni [[2000]]. Selama pendidikannya, Yiruma merilis album pertamanya, ''Love Scene'' melalui Decca Records, menggelar beberapa tur pertunjukan di Eropa. Gaya bermusik Yiruma terbilang ''misclassify'' karena musiknya sangat populer di semua kalangan usia. Instrumentalia solo pianonya lebih cenderung pada gaya ''new classical'' atau bisa juga disebut kontemporer klasik. Tapi, penelitian komposisinya, baik struktur lagu-lagunya maupun tekniknya dipengaruhi oleh gaya klasik.
