STAR (Satellite Television for the Asian Region) ialah sebuah televisi satelit berbayar yang berbasis di Hong Kong.

Menurut sumbernya, seluruh televisi dalam jaringan STAR dinikmati oleh kurang lebih 300 juta pemirsa di 53 negara.

Di Indonesia, STAR memiliki sebanyak dua puluh persen saham di televisi Antv.

Sejarah

STAR awalnya didirkan tahun 1990 oleh Hutchison Whampoa, dimana pada tahun 1995 diakuisisi oleh Rupert Murdoch News Corporation sebanyak 63,5%.

Tahun 1994 STAR menghilangkan saluran BBC World untuk wilayah China disebabkan pemerintahan komunis yang berkuasa tidak mengkehendaki adanya berita dari Barat di wilayahnya.

Saluran

STAR's revenues have increased from $220 million in 2003 to $245 million in 2004. STAR has emerged as India's second-largest media company after Bennett, Coleman & Co which is the publisher of Times of India. STAR's main revenues come from India, with 80% of Indian viewers watching Star channels.

The Economist has suggested that News Corporation may eventually merge STAR with BSkyB and DirecTV (its United Kingdom and United States satellite businesses) to form a global satellite TV company.

STAR TV should not be confused with StarChoice in Canada -- neither they nor its parent, Shaw Communications, own any interest in STAR TV.
