The Walt Disney Company (secara harfiah berarti "Perusahaan Walt Disney", atau lebih dikenal dengan nama Disney) adalah perusahaan konglomerat di bidang hiburan dan media terbesar di dunia. Didirikan pada 16 Oktober 1923, perusahaan ini didirikan oleh Walt Disney dan Roy Oliver Disney dengan nama Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio. Pusatnya terletak di Burbank, California.

Laba Disney pada 2004 adalah sebesar $30,8 miliar USD dan merupakan komponen Dow Jones Industrial Average. Perusahaan ini dikenal sebagai Walt Disney Productions, Ltd. sampai 6 Februari 1986 dan kemudian diubah menjadi namanya sekarang.
Sejarah
Perusahaan ini didirikan pada tahun 1923 oleh Walt dan Roy Disney. Film pertama yang dirilis adalah Alice's Day at Sea. Pada tahun 1928, Walt dan Roy menciptakan tokoh kartun Miki Tikus. Pada tahun 1934, pertama kali memperkenalkan tokoh kartun Donal Bebek, Mini Tikus dan Gufi. Film kedua yang dirilis tahun itu ialah Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, dan Fantasia dan Humphrey yang termasuk karakter fiksi Disney buatan artis komik Giogio Cavazzano dan Carlo Chendi. Ia adalah seorang detektif yang berpetualang menyelidiki kasus bersama asistennya, Didi Bebek. Biasanya ia menerima tugas dari Gober Bebek.
Pada tahun 1940, studio dipindahkan ke Burbank, California. Dan pada tahun 1955, pertama kali membuka Disneyland. Pesaing-pesaing utama ialah:
Walt Disney meninggal pada tahun 1966 dan Roy Disney meninggal pada tahun 1971. Tanpa saudara Disney kreatif dan bimbingan pemasaran, perusahaan mengalami penurunan drastis. Tahun 1967, didirikan pula Walt Disney World Resort. Namun pada tahun 1981, Stephen Hillenburg keluar dari perusahaan tersebut untuk memulai usahanya di MTV Networks. Pada tahun 1983, didirikan stasiun televisi pertama, Disney Channel dan ESPN (ESPN diluncurkan tahun 1979). Menyusul kemudian aset-aset baru, yakni Touchstone Films, Miramax, dan Hollywood Pictures.
Namun sesudah kesuksesan film Beauty and the Beast, Jeffrey Katzenberg keluar dari perusahaan tersebut untuk bergabung dengan DreamWorks. Pada tahun 1996, perusahaan tersebut memperoleh ABC. Disusul Toon Disney dan Playhouse Disney.
Pada tahun 2002, The Walt Disney Company membeli Saban Entertainment dan mengganti namanya menjadi BVS Entertainment. Pada tahun 2007, perusahaan ini menghentikan pemakaian nama Buena Vista, karena dianggap kurang cocok dengan perusahaan. Pada tahun 2009, Disney XD resmi diluncurkan.
Pada tanggal 31 Agustus 2009, perusahaan tersebut telah mengumumkan kesepakatan untuk memperoleh saham Marvel Entertainment dengan jumlah tunai sebesar $ 4 miliar.[3] Penggabungan Marvel dengan Disney telah dilangsungkan pada tanggal 31 Desember 2009.[4]
Pada tanggal 12 Mei 2010, Disney secara resmi mengembalikan hak kepemilikan lisensi Power Rangers kepada Haim Saban. Haim Saban nantinya akan menghasilkan musim-musim baru yang akan ditayangkan di Nickelodeon pada tahun 2011 sementara 700 episode sebelumnya akan ditayangkan lagi di Nicktoons Network.[5][6]
Juga pada tahun 2010, Disney menjual perusahaan film Miramax kepada Filmyard Holdings, LLC. Situasi tersebut mengakhiri keterlibatan Disney dengan studio untuk pertama kalinya dalam 17 tahun.
