Kompetisi ini terbilang sukses dan menjamur, tidak hanya di Amerika saja namun juga diberbagai belahan dunia, termasuk The Voice Indonesia. Para pesertanya diaudisi secara publik dengan usia minimal 15 tahun (Menjadi 13 tahun pada musim 12), dan ditayangkan di NBC.

Pemenang ditentukan oleh pemirsa dengan voting melalui telepon, internet, pesan SMS, dan total jumlah pembelian pada iTunes Store. Juara ini kemudian berhak menerima kontrak rekaman senilai US $ 100.000 dengan Universal Music Group. Ada tiga belas pemenang dari acara pertama hingga saat ini: Javier Colon (Musim I), Jermaine Paul (Musim II), Cassadee Pope (Musim III), Danielle Bradbery[1] (Musim IV), Tessanne Chin (Musim V), Josh Kaufman (Musim VI), Craig Wayne Boyd (Musim VII), Sawyer Fredericks (Musim VIII), Jordan Smith (Musim IX), Alison Porter (Musim X), Sundance Head (Musim XI), Chris Blue (Musim XII), Chloe Kohanski (Musim XIII), Brynn Cartelli (Musim XIV).


The Voice USA mulai ditayangkan pada tanggal 26 April 2011 sebagai sebuah program TV pada musim semi. Acara ini terbukti menjadi hit untuk NBC dan kemudian diperluas ke dalam siklus musim gugur saat musim ketiga ditayangkan pada tanggal 10 September 2012.

Seri ini menggunakan panel dari empat hakim yang bertugas menilai penampilan para kontestan. Setiap hakim juga berfungsi sebagai pelatih, membimbing kontestan yang dipilih. Panel juri asli terdiri dari Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine, dan Blake Shelton. Sedangkan pada musim keempat, panel juri terdiri dari Levine, Shelton, Shakira, dan Usher. Pada season ke 7 Cee Lo Green memundurkan diri dari the voice dan Christina Aguilera tidak dapat menjadi juri di season 7 karena sedang fokus terhadap kehamilan dari pernikahan keduanya. Akhirnya mereka berdua di gantikan oleh Pharrel William dan Gwen Stefani tetapi Christina kembali di season 8

Di musim ke 11, Miley Cyrus dan Alicia Keys menggantikan posisi coach Gwen Stefani dan Pharrell Williams.

Di musim ke 12 Gwen Stefani menggantikan posisi coach Miley Cyrus.

Di musim 13, Jennifer Hudson dan Miley Cyrus menggantikan posisi coach Alicia Keys dan Gwen Stefani.

Di musim 14, Kelly Clarkson dan Alicia Keys menggantikan posisi coach Jennifer Hudson dan Miley Cyrus
