Renée Kathleen Zellweger lahir pada tanggal 25 April 1969 di Katy, Texas.[3][4] Ayahnya, Emil Erich Zellweger, berasal dari kota Au, St. Gallen, Swiss dan berasal dari keluarga bangsawan Appenzell.[5] Ia merupakan seorang insinyur mekanik dan listrik yang bekerja di bisnis penyulingan minyak.[6] Ibunya, Kjellfrid Irene Andreassen,[6] berasal dari Norwegia berketurunan Finlandia.[7][8][9] Kjellfrid besar di Ekkerøy dekat Vadsø, sama seperti wilayah Kirkenes[10].
