Pembunuhan

JST, sekitar lima setengah jam setelah syuting. Dia adalah perdana menteri Jepang ketujuh yang dibunuh dan pertama sejak 1936, ketika Saitō Makoto dan Takahashi Korekiyo terbunuh sebagai bagian dari Insiden 26 FebruariOn 8 July 2022, Abe was making a speech on behalf of Councillor Kei Satō, a Liberal Democratic Party candidate running for re-election, ahead of upcoming upper house elections scheduled on Sunday, 10 July. At approximately 11:30 a.m. JST (UTC+9), Abe was shot twice from behind with an improvised hand made gun that resembled a double-barreled shotgun, and collapsed. The pellets were deep enough to reach his heart.

Abe was initially conscious and communicative right after he was shot. He was transported to a local hospital by an emergency helicopter with a wound on the right side of his neck and internal bleeding under his left chest and was reported to have no vital signs when he arrived at Nara Medical University Hospital in Kashihara. At a press conference held from 2:45 p.m., Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said Abe was in a critical condition and that "doctors [were] doing everything they [could]". Abe died at the hospital at 5:03 p.m. JST, around five and a half hours after the shooting. He is the seventh Japanese prime minister to be assassinated and first since 1936, when Saitō Makoto and Takahashi Korekiyo were killed as part of the February 26 Incident.

Suspect

Tetsuya Yamagami (Jepang: 山上徹也), a 41-year-old man from Nara City and a former member of the Maritime Self-Defense Force from 2002 to 2005, was arrested by Nara Prefectural Police at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder and was transferred to the Nara West Police Station. He was described as being calm and making no attempts to flee.[5][6][7] Yamagami told investigators that he was dissatisfied with the former prime minister and intended to kill him.[8]

Aftermath

A crisis management center was established at the prime minister's office.[9] Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, who was in Yamagata Prefecture for the election campaign, cancelled his remaining schedule in order to return to Tokyo.[10] All other members of the incumbent cabinet were also called back to Tokyo, with the exception of Foreign Affairs Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi who was in Indonesia for an upcoming G20 summit, according to Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno.[11]

Reactions

Condolences for Shinzo Abe were sent by world leaders, including those of Ukraine,[12] Bangladesh,[13] France,[14] South Korea,[15] Malaysia,[16] and Taiwan.[15] Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, has called the attack a "brutal and cowardly murder". In a tweet, Jens Stoltenberg, Secretary General of NATO, stated that he was "deeply saddened by the heinous killing of Shinzo Abe". Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, has announced that India would observe a day of national mourning.[17] In Russia, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov condemned the assassination, and described Abe as a "...patriot who defended Japan's interests at the negotiating table, due to which he had good relations with Putin".[18] Outgoing Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Boris Johnson issued a short statement on Twitter in which he said that Abe's "global leadership through unchartered times will be remembered by many", adding that the UK would stand with Japan during "this dark and sad time."[19] Former Prime Minister of Australia Tony Abbott also offered his condolences on Twitter, saying that Australia had "lost a great friend" and Japan "its most significant post-war leader" before adding that "Under Abe, Japan assumed its rightful place as the leading democracy of the western Pacific." [20] Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian expressed shock over the incident, remarking that "...this unexpected incident should not be linked with China-Japan relations".[21]
