Jalur Utama Muroran (室蘭本線code: ja is deprecated , Muroran Honsen) adalah jalur kereta api di Hokkaido yang dioperasikan oleh Perusahaan Kereta Api Hokkaido (JR Hokkaido), jalur ini berada di antara Stasiun Oshamambe di Oshamambe dan Stasiun Iwamizawa di Iwamizawa, kira-kira sejajar dengan pesisir Subprefektur Iburi. Ada juga jalur cabang yang ada didalam kota Muroran, antara Stasiun Higashi-muroran dan Stasiun Muroran.

Ruas sepanjang 28,7 km (17,8 mil) antara Shiraoi dan Numanohata adalah ruas rel lurus terpanjang di Jepang.

Pada tanggal 19 November 2016, Presiden JR Hokkaido mengumumkan rencana untuk merasionalisasi jaringan hingga 1.237 km, atau ~50% dari jaringan saat ini,^[1] termasuk usulan konversi untuk Sektor Ketiga pada bagian Tomakomai-Iwamizawa di Jalur Utama Muroran. Namun, jika pemerintah daerah tidak mencapai kesepakatan, bagian tersebut dapat ditutup.

Layanan

Kereta ekspres terbatas Super Hokuto

Ruas antara Oshamambe dan Numanohata merupakan bagian dari jalur penghubung utama antara Sapporo dan Hakodate. Dengan demikian, kereta ekspres terbatas Super Hokuto dan Hokuto beroperasi antara dua kota tersebut, sekali setiap 1 hingga 2 jam, serta kereta ekspres terbatas Suzuran antara Sapporo dan Muroran.^[2]

Untuk layanan lokal, jalur tersebut secara garis besar dibagi menjadi empat seksi, yaitu seksi antara Oshamambe dan Higashi-Muroran, antara Higashi-Muroran dan Muroran, antara Higashi-Muroran dan Tomakomai, serta antara Tomakomai dan Iwamizawa. Bagian terakhir dulunya merupakan rute angkutan penting, tetapi menjadi jalur lokal yang sepi setelah tambang batu bara ditutup.

Layanan sebelumnya

Sebelum pembukaan Hokkaido Shinkansen, terdapat juga kereta gerbong tidur antara Honshū dan Hokkaido, seperti Hokutosei, Cassiopeia, Twilight Express, dan Hamanasu.
