Shanghai (Aksara Tionghoa: 上海 | Pinyin: Shànghǎi; Bahasa Shanghai IPA: /zɑ̃ hɛ/) adalah kota terbesar Republik Rakyat Cina dan terletak di tepi delta Changjiang. Perkembangan kota ini dalam beberapa dekade terakhir telah membuatnya menjadi pusat ekonomi, perdagangan, finansial dan komunikasi terpenting Cina.
Shanghai juga merupakan salah satu pelabuhan tersibuk di dunia, beserta dengan Singapura dan Rotterdam.
Secara administratif, Shanghai adalah salah satu dari empat kotamadya Cina, yang mempunyai status provinsi.
Dua karakter Tionghoa dalam nama "Shanghai" secara harafiah berarti "atas" dan "laut". Penggunaan nama ini terjadi pertama kalinya pada masa Dinasti Song, pada saat di mana sudah ada pertemuan sungai dan sebuah kota kecil bernama "Shanghai" di daerah tersebut. Sejarah
Sebelum terbentuknya kota Shanghai, Shanghai adalah bagian dari kotamadya Songjiang yang diatur oleh provinsi Suzhou. Kotamadya ini dibentuk sekitar 1000 tahun yang lalu. Sejak zaman pemerintahan Dinasti Song (960-1279), Shanghai secara bertahap berkembang menjadi pelabuhan yang sibuk.
Kota Shanghai mulai dibangun sejak didirikannya tembok kota pada tahun 1553 SM. Tetapi sebelum abad ke-19, Shanghai bukanlah kota yang besar, dan bila dibandingkan dengan kota-kota besar Cina lainnya, Shanghai hanya memiliki sedikit bangunan bersejarah. Sebelum tahun 1927 Shanghai berada dibawah pemerintah provinsi Jiangsu dengan ibukota Nanjing. Sejak Shanghai menjadi Kota Administrasi Spesial pada tahun 1927, statusnya menjadi sama seperti provinsi Cina yang lain.
Peranan kota Shanghai berubah secara drastis pada abad ke-19, dengan posisi yang strategis di mulut sungai Yangtze menjadikannya lokasi yang ideal untuk perdagangan dengan dunia barat.
Pada saat Perang Opium Pertama di awal abad ke-19, pasukan Inggris ditempatkan sementara di Shanghai. Perang tersebut berakhir dengan ditandatanganinya Perjanjian Nanjing pada tahun 1842, yang membuka beberapa pelabuhan-pelabuhan tertentu, termasuk Shanghai, untuk perdagangan internasional. Perjanjian Bogue yang ditandatangani pada tahun 1843 bersama dengan Perjanjian Sino-Amerika di Wangsia pada tahun 1844 memberi hak luar biasa kepada negara-negara asing untuk menguasai tanah-tanah di Cina.
Pemberontakan Taiping pecah pada tahun 1850, dan Shanghai dikuasai oleh kelompok pecahan dari pemberontak tersebut bernama Perkumpulan Pedang-pedang Kecil. Pertikaian tersebut menghancurkan daerah pinggiran tetapi tidak menyentuh daerah-daerah pendudukan asing hingga masyarakat Cina lari dan mencari pengungsian ke sana. Meskipun masyarakat Cina dilarang untuk tinggal di daerah pendudukan asing, peraturan baru yang dibuat tahun 1854 membolehkan masyarakat Cina untuk memilikinya dan berakibat harga tanah melesat tinggi. Tahun tersebut juga diadakan pertemuan pertama Perwalian Kota Shanghai, yang diperbantukan untuk mengatur daerah kekuasaan asing. Daerah kekuasaan Inggris dan Amerika disatukan pada tanun 1863 untuk membentuk daerah Pendudukan Internasional.
Perang antara Cina-Jepang (1894-1895) memperebutkan kuasa atas Korea diakhiri dengan Perjanjian Shimonoseki, dimana Jepang bangkit sebagai penguasa asing baru di Shanghai. Jepang mendirikan pabrik pertama di Shanghai yang segera diikuti oleh penguasa-penguasa asing lainnya hingga membangkitkan kegiatan industri di sana.
Shanghai pada waktu itu adalah pusat keuangan terbesar di Asia Timur. Di bawah Republik Rakyat Cina, Shanghai menjadi kota spesial di tahun 1927 dan ditingkatkan menjadi kotamadya pada bulan Mei tahun 1930. Angkatan Laut Jepang mengebom Shanghai pada tanggal 28 Januari 1932, dalam usahanya untuk menekan protes mahasiswa Cina atas Insiden Manchuria beserta pendudukan Jepang. Shanghai direbut Jepang pada Pergulatan Shanghai tahun 1937 hingga kekalahan mereka pada tahun 1945. Pada masa Perang Dunia II, Shanghai adalah pusat pengungsian dari pengungsi-pengungsi Eropa. Shanghai juga merupakan satu-satunya kota di dunia yang menerima orang-orang Yahudi tanpa syarat pada waktu itu.
Pada tanggal 27 Mei 1949, Shanghai dikuasai Partai Komunis Cina dan merupakan salah satu dari dua bekas kotamadya Republik Rakyat Cina yang tidak segera digabung dengan provinsi tetangganya (yang lainnya Beijing). Selanjutnya, Shanghai melewati beberapa proses perubahan perbatasan beserta bagian-bagiannya, terutama pada dekade berikutnya.
