John B. Cobb

John B. Cobb, Jr. (lahir 9 Februari 1925) adalah seorang teolog United Methodist Amerika yang memainkan peranan penting dalam perkembangan teologi proses. Ia memadukan metafisika Alfred North Whitehead ke dalam agama Kristen, dan menerapkannya ke dalam masalah-masalah keadilan sosial.

Biografi

John Cobb dilahirkan di Jepang pada 1925 dalam keluarga misionaris Methodis. Pada 1940, ia pindah ke Georgia untuk masuk ke SMA. Setelah lulus, ia masuk ke sekolah tinggi (junior college), Emory College (kini Oxford College, Universitas Emory) di Oxford, Georgia. Ia seorang yang sangat saleh dan memiliki keyakinan moral yang kuat. Ia berjuang melawan rasialisme dan prasangka di antara teman-temannya. Pada 1944 ia masuk dinas militer dan berjumpa dengan kaum intelektual dari agama-agama lain, termasuk Yudaisme dan Katolik, yang memperlihatkan kepadanya perspektif-perspektif baru. Pada saat inilah ia memperoleh pengalaman keagamaan yang menyebabkannya menjadi seorang pendeta.

Pluralisme yang kristosentris

Cobb menganjurkan sebuah teologi yang berhasil menjadi kristosentris dan pluralistik dalam pendekatannya terhadap agama-agama lain. Ia menyatakan bahwa kristosentrisme berakar dalam Sofia, atau hikmat ilahi, yang merupakan esensi (hakikat) Allah yang terwujud di dalam Kristus. Ia menegaskan bahwa orang Kristen harus menolak arogansi, eksklusivisme, dan dogmatisme karena semua itu adalah halangan bagi transofrmasi kristologis yang kreatif. Dalam pemahaman ini, agama-agama lain dapat menghampiri esensi Kristus tanpa harus percaya kepada Kristus per se. Cobb melihat Yesus sebagai pusat sejarah, tetapi bukan keseluruhan dari sejarah. Ia melihat perlunya memperluas sejarah ini hingga mengikutsertakan agama-agama lain. Bahkan bila proses kreatif kristologis ini menyebabkan orang mengganti posisi sentral Kristus di dalam sejarah itu dengan sesuatu yang lain, katanya, maka penggantian itu sendiri adalah kesetiaan dan sikap yang jujur (true) kepada Kristus.
