Example of what Automoderator will look like when reverting an edit.

Automoderator is a tool under development by the Moderator Tools team at the Wikimedia Foundation. It will be able to automatically revert edits based on a machine-learning model which determines how likely an edit is to be vandalism. The tool will be configurable, including whether it is turned on or off, by the community.

We would like to pilot Automoderator on Indonesian Wikipedia, to test how it works in an active Wikimedia project and get your feedback to improve it.

What is Automoderator?

Wikimania presentation (13:50)

Automoderator is a new extension under development. It uses new machine learning models ('revert risk') to identify which edits are likely to need reverting. It then automatically reverts any edits above a community-defined threshold.

We estimate that Automoderator will revert 7-29 edits per day on average (see the table below), depending on the threshold being used, and will primarily revert edits which are vandalism.

Because Automoderator is using a machine learning model, it will not be completely accurate. It will sometimes be wrong and will revert a good edit. We expect Automoderator to be deployed with an accuracy greater than 99%. Read more about reporting false positives below.

How to use Automoderator

Turning Automoderator on or off

To turn Automoderator on or off ... TODO

Changing Automoderator's 'caution level'

Automoderator can be more or less cautious about which edits it reverts. At a high caution level it will revert only a few edits per day, but will rarely be wrong. At lower caution levels it will revert more edits, but sometimes incorrectly revert good edits. In the future we will provide you with the tools to change this setting, but for now the Moderator Tools team has configured Automoderator to use the most cautious setting for testing.

Changing Automoderator's username

Although we plan to make this available for communities to change directly in the future, for now please let us know on the talk page if you would like us to change Automoderator's username.

Please share your thoughts and feedback on how Automoderator works on the talk page.

False positives

Automoderator will sometimes be wrong and will revert a good edit. If Automoderator makes an incorrect edit, it can safely be reverted - it will not revert you. Editors may report these false positive edits at [The false positive reporting page].

Experienced editors should be ready to address these issues by watching [The false positive reporting page].

Project updates

We will post updates here as we continue to build Automoderator's features.
