Genus Polytmus diperkenalkan oleh ahli zoologi Perancis Mathurin Jacques Brisson pada tahun 1760 dengan tipe spesies sebagai Polytmus guainumbi thaumantias, subspesies dari tenggorok-emas ekor-putih . [1] [2] Nama genusnya berasal dari bahasa Yunani Kuno πολυτιμος polutimos "sangat mahal", "berharga". [3]
