Genus Anthracothorax diperkenalkan oleh ahli zoologi Jerman Friedrich Boie pada tahun 1831. [1] Jenis spesies tersebut kemudian ditetapkan sebagai pauh leher-hijau ( Anthracothorax viridigula ). [2] Nama generiknya menggabungkan bahasa Yunani Kuno anthrax yang berarti "batubara" (yaitu hitam) dengan thōrax yang berarti "dada". [3]
Sebuah studi filogenetik molekuler yang diterbitkan pada tahun 2014 menemukan bahwa Anthracothorax bersifat parafiletik terhadap Eulampis . [4] [5]
