ABC-Mart, Inc. (株式会社エービーシー・マート Kabushiki gaisha Ē Bī Shī Māto) is a Japanese footwear company, with stores in Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan.

History

sunting

The company was founded by Masahiro Miki in Shinjuku in 1985 as Boeki Shoji Inc. In 1987, the company moved to Arakawa and changed its name to International Trading Corporation (ITC). It was in 1990 that ABC-Mart was established, with three stores opening in Tokyo. A year later, ABC-Mart acquired the exclusive sales rights of Vans products in Japan. The company was then re-established as a joint stock company in 1997 before moving its headquarters to Shibuya a year later.[1]

In 2002, ITC absorbed ABC-Mart and was renamed ABC-Mart, Inc. before being publicly listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. The company then opened its first branch in South Korea in 2003 and in Taiwan in 2009.[1]

In 2012, ABC-Mart bought the American company LaCrosse Footwear, which in turn purchased the U.S. boot maker Whites Boots in 2014.[2]

In 2019, ABC-Mart set a milestone by opening its 1,000th store.[1]

Overview

The company operates a shoe retail chain nationwide. As of the end of November 2019, it has 1,020 stores in Japan and 312 stores overseas[1]. In Japan, the stores are located in downtown areas, large roadside stores in rural areas, and other stores (mainly in suburban areas) as specialty store tenants in shopping centers and fashion buildings. They also have outlet stores in some outlet malls.

They have acquired the trademark rights to the HAWKINS and Vans brands and are exclusively selling shoes of these brands as national brands.

They have introduced the SPA method (comprehensive management from product planning to sales) with a focus on national brands, and sell low-priced, high-quality products. They have recorded sales with a profit margin of over 20%, which is unusual for a shoe retailer.[2]

Scandal

Violation of the Labor Standards Act through overtime work

On July 2, 2015, the Tokyo Labor Bureau's Special Task Force for the Elimination of Excessive Work sent documents to the Tokyo District Public Prosecutor's Office against the company and its executives for violating the Labor Standards Act through overtime work.[7][8] This is for the suspicion that ABC Mart forced four employees to work significant amounts of overtime at two stores in Tokyo in 2014.[7][9] The bureau recommended that ABC Mart take corrective action, citing the prevalence of long hours of overtime work at its stores, but as no improvements were seen, it decided to send the documents to the prosecutor's office.[10] This is the first time that the special task force has sent a case to the prosecutor's office since its inception.[8]

Regarding this matter, ABC Mart director Yutaka Kojima explained at the financial results announcement on the 8th that "We took measures last year, such as increasing recruitment and thoroughly managing working hours, and long hours of overtime work have already been eliminated at all stores."[11]

On March 28, 2017, the Consumer Affairs Agency ordered the company to take measures to prevent recurrence of a violation of the Act on Premiums and Representations (misleading representations of benefits) for 47 products, including shoes and sandals from four brands, including "HAWKINS" and "Vans," in newspaper inserts in 2015, in which the company set and listed both the actual sales price and a "manufacturer's suggested retail price" that was higher than the actual sales price, giving the impression that the products were being sold at a discount.[12]
