Didelphimorphia adalah ordo oposum umum di belahan barat. Oposum bercabang dari marsupial Amerika Selatan dasar pada akhir Cretaceous atau awal Paleocene. Mereka umumnya juga disebut "posum", walaupun istilah tersebut juga untuk fauna Australia dari subordo Phalangeriformes. Opossum Virginia adalah satu-satunya binatang bernama oposum. Kata tersebut berasal dari wapathemwa bahasa Algonquian.
