Setelah baru-baru ini melarikan diri dari Penjara Bikini Bottom, Plankton (yang diusir oleh istri komputernya) menemukan SpongeBob yang sedang bernyanyi tentang formula Krabby Patty (yang diekspresikan dengan bunyi tuut..tuut..). Plankton pun mencoba untuk membuat sebuah band dengan maksud membuat SpongeBob mengatakan resep formulanya, dan ini memberikan keuntungan Plankton untuk tidak hanya belajar formulanya, tetapi juga untuk mencuri Krabby Patty dengan memiliki band yang akan tampil di Krusty Krab.

Ketika Mr Krabs melihat SpongeBob mengambil satu sen (satu penny) di jalan dan memasukkannya ke dalam sakunya, dia mencari segala cara untuk mendapatkan satu penny itu - bahkan membangun bioskop di sebelah Krusty Krab sehingga ia dapat membuat SpongeBob memberi satu penny. Namun, SpongeBob menegaskan dia tidak memiliki sepeser pun. Di rumah SpongeBob, ternyata didapatkan kenyataan bahwa dia hanya mengambil sepotong kering dari Permen karet untuk koleksi pribadinya, yang ternyata, ketika Mr Krabs pergi, merupakan uang $ 500 lama - tetapi SpongeBob tidak berpikir itu berharga. Sementara itu, Mr Krabs, masih berpikir bahwa SpongeBob memiliki sepeser pun, menggali pekarangan SpongeBob dalam upaya untuk menemukannya.

Ironisnya, semua yang dia lakukan untuk mencoba mendapatkan satu penny tersebut ternyata berdampak jauh lebih banyak daripada uang sepeser pun dia setelahnya.

Nyonya Puff mengumumkan akan diadakannya perjalanan lapangan kelas ke Nautical Museum (yang berada di sebuah kapal besar), dan SpongeBob melihat peluang besar untuk mendapatkan SIM nya. Ia pun menghafal seluruh sejarah berperahu di malam sebelumnya. SpogeBob hampir ketinggalan bus tetapi ketika dia naik (dalam keadaan belum mandi), Nyonya Puff menyemprot dia dengan "Shower in a Can" (Pembersih Tubuh Kalengan). Ia menuntun seluruh tur dan kemudian pergi ke ruang berperahu dan secara tidak sadar menggerakkan perahunya. Dia berhenti dalam waktu yang tepat tetapi ternyata hal itu adalah seseorang yang sedang menarik kapalnya ke pelabuhan bukan SpongeBob yang mengemudi perahu. Dia yang sebelumnya mendapat SIM, akhirnya dirobek oleh Nyonya Puff.

Squidward melihat papan iklan yang menuliskan bahwa Bikini Bottom Symphony Orchestra sedang mencari seorang komposer berbakat yang bersedia untuk menulis karya musik bagi mereka untuk digunakan pada konser simfoninya. Squidward pun panik dan langsung mengebut menulis komposisinya ketika dia mengetahui bahwa sayembara tersebut berakhir besok (hanya satu hari). Untungnya, Squidward musik menulis cukup baik untuk diterima oleh Bikini Bottom Symphony Orchestra, tapi ia sengaja menulis segala yang ia dengar ketika SpongeBob bermain dokter untuk memperbaiki pantat Patrick yang rusak.

Squidward mengatakan kepada SpongeBob bahwa ia harus lebih "normal". SpongeBob pun menonton video yang ia pinjam dari Squidward berjudul "Bagaimana Menjadi Normal untuk Pemula" dan mengadopsi kepribadian yang ia pelajari dari sana, dan akhirnya berubah bentuk dan kehilangan kepribadian anehnya. SpongeBob satu hari bangun dan ia menemukan bahwa tidak ada seorangpun yang berada diBikini Bottom kecuali dirinya. Malam itu ia sangat marah sehingga ia memutuskan untuk menghidupi semua orang untuk mereka, tapi ia gagal ketika dia berpura-pura menjadi Mrs Puff tapi bersorak ketika dia membuat SIM dirinya itu sendiri. Dia pun menamai perahunya "Boaty", tapi SpongeBob Patrick palsu "mengatakan" dia tidak percaya Boaty. Selama beberapa hari terakhir SpongeBob menjadi takut perahu. Ketika ia melihat satu adegan kapal di bioskop dia berjalan menjauh. Para Warga Bikini Bottom pun akhirnya kembali dan SpongeBob bertanya di mana mereka. Mr Krabs menjelaskan bahwa mereka berada di liburan yang disebut "Hari Nasional Tanpa SpongeBob" (yang, pada kenyataannya berlangsung selama lebih dari satu hari). Ketika Patrick keluar dengan T-shirt dengan SpongeBob yang dicoret, SpongeBob menjadi depresi. Mr Krabs memberitahu SpongeBob bahwa liburan tersebut terinspirasi oleh SpongeBob, dan SpongeBob bersorak-sorai. Patrick mengatakan "Hebat. SpongeBob dan Patrick mendapatkan peluit geser baru dan terus bermain dengan benda tersebut, dan SpongeBob dan Patrick selalu mengganggu Squidward. Squidward pun menjadi terlalu terganggu oleh mereka, ia kemudian mencuri salah satu dari peluit geser milik mereka untuk melihat respon mereka (apa yang mereka rasakan). Jadi ketika Spongebob mengumumkan bahwa Squidward dapat bersiul geser yang besar, dia terus bermain dan mereka semua bermain mereka dan menari bagi mereka. SpongeBob dan Patrick mencoba untuk mendapatkan kulit coklat untuk dapat bergabung dalam pesta pantai Craig Mammalton (tokoh Bikini Bottom yang tubuhnya benar-benar coklat luar-dalam), tetapi yang terjadi malah kulit SpongeBob menjadi melepuh (terima kasih kepada Patrick yang lupa untuk mengawasinya). Berkeinginan mendapatkan hidung, Patrick melakukan operasi plastik untuk mendapatkan satu hidung. Meskipun awalnya menikmatinya, ia menjadi keras terobsesi dengan menghilangkan bau vulgar setelah (dan menemukan) bau mereka. Upaya fanatik tersebut menyebabkan dia ikut campur dalam kehidupan teman-temannya, ia meledakkan sebongkah keju impor milik Squidward dengan sebuah peluncur roket, menutup pori-pori SpongeBob dengan gabus, menaruh di meja pelanggan dari Krusty Krab dengan wangi lilin aromaterapi, dan akhirnya memuncak ketika ia semprotkan Sandy dengan deodoran dan mengatakan kepadanya untuk mandi. Kempatnya sepakat menyalahkan hidung baru Patrick untuk semua masalah ini, sehingga mereka membentuk sebuah bola besar sampah yang diletakkan didepan rumah Patrick sehingga hidung Patrick pun menjadi sangat terganggu. SpongeBob menjadi tertekan untuk menghukum temannya karena ingin menjadi seperti orang lain (tapi Squidward, tidak mengejutkan, tidak peduli). Hal ini kemudian mengungkapkan bahwa Patrick sekali lagi menjalani operasi plastik, kali ini untuk mendapatkan telinga manusia yang besar.

Setelah menerima pengiriman bahan rahasia Krabby Patty, SpongeBob menemukan lubang dalam koper dan formulanya hilang. SpongeBob dan Patrick memulai pencarian ke seantero Bikini Bottom dalam upaya untuk menemukannya, tapi semua tersangka yang mereka duga ternyata tidak bersalah, bahkan Plankton. Ketika mereka menginformasikan Mr Krabs, ia langsung menuduh SpongeBob, dengan membuat sebuah cerita (reka adegan) yang aneh, dan menyatakan bahwa ia akan memanggil polisi (yang sudah ada dan mendengar segala sesuatunya). Namun, dalam prosesnya, dia sengaja mengungkapkan bahwa ia sendiri telah mencuri bahan untuk menghindari membayar untuk itu, dan berusaha untuk membingkai SpongeBob sebagai close-up. Kalimat hukuman "utama" Hakim untuk Mr Krabs : dia harus memberikan Krabby Patty gratis sepanjang hari. Adegan akhir menunjukkan SpongeBob membagikan Krabby Patty, dan Mr Krabs yang diikat ke kursi berteriak-teriak dan dipaksa untuk menyaksikan pembagian gratis itu oleh polisi, yang oleh polisi dianggap sebagai hiburan.

Plankton terkejut ketika menemukan bahwa dia memiliki seorang pelanggan tetap yang pergi ke Chum Bucket sehari-hari untuk makan dan tampaknya seperti makanan. SpongeBob dan Mr Krabs mencoba berbagai cara untuk membuatnya menjauh dari Chum Bucket, bahkan membuat Chum (makanan ala Chum Bucket) mereka sendiri, tetapi semua gagal. Pada akhirnya, pelanggan langganan Plankton pun kembali dan mengungkapkan bahwa Karen telah membayar dia untuk makan di Chum Bucket untuk menghentikan Plankton dari terus mengeluh, dan mengungkapkan bahwa ia benar-benar membenci makanan Chum itu (dan bahkan telah dirawat di rumah sakit dua kali karena konsumsi Chum nya itu). • Squidward said he sold his bicycle, and in episodes such as "Choir Boys" and "Truth or Square", he is shown riding a recumbent bicycle.

When Mr. Krabs discovers that the newspaper business is profitable, he makes a tabloid. He orders SpongeBob to find stories, and then make them "more interesting"; he must write stories that contain defaming lies about others. (However, he calls them "practical jokes.") These stories soon lead to disaster for many people and their lives are ruined. When SpongeBob grows sad at that idea, Mr. Krabs refuses to stop making him tell lies. SpongeBob however can no longer write these defaming lies, he decides to reveal Mr. Krabs' schemes, omn the newspaper which angers the citizens and they take their money back. Mr. Krabs is sad that he has lost all the cash he made from his less-than-truthful publication, but then looks at a printing press and decides to make counterfeit money.

• The newspaper is like The Star Ledger. The last story in the paper is about Mr. Krabs being a sick taskmaster because he is seen treating SpongeBob like a slave. Also, the health inspector who shut down the Chum Bucket is the same inspector who passed the Krusty Krab in Nasty Patty.

Pearl has her own slumber party. Mr. Krabs tries to stop them from having too much fun and tells Spongebob to stop the slumber party. After numerous tries and fails, Spongebob tries in one last effort to sabotage the party. He ends up breaking a leak in Mr. Krabs root beer supply and drinks all the beer. When he is finished, he goes insane and (much to Pearl and her friends surprise) acts like a zombie to Pearl and her friends. When all the beer in Spongebob flowed out, Mr. Krabs returns to his house only to find out that it is soaked with his supply of root beer.

SpongeBob enters Gary in a pet show, but when he sees the other pets well groomed, he decides to give Gary a makeover. But Gary isn't happy being made into a pretty show snail, and the other pets aren't either, turning into a pet riot. Gary tells them what to do and all the pets obey and cause havoc in the pet show.

Patrick warns SpongeBob that throwing his money to all of his so-called "friends" will make him bankrupt. He learns his lesson the hard way when all of his money is gone. He finally realizes that Patrick was his only true friend, but is shocked when Patrick finds a new "volleyball" - which is actually a very large diamond.

Squidward is taking a shower and singing "Figaro". He then gets dressed and reveals to the audience that he wants to become the lead singer in the Bikini Bottom's Men's Choir, thinking his singing is better. He goes outside to discover SpongeBob lying on the ground. SpongeBob is upset because Patrick is gone at a family reunion. SpongeBob asks Squidward if he can come with him to choir practice, but Squidward says no. SpongeBob even tries singing, but Squidward ignores him. At choir practice, they declare that SpongeBob sings better than Squidward. SpongeBob agrees to the job they offer him, but only if they find a spot for Squidward. They agree, but the job Squidward gets is - much to his annoyance - turning the pages for SpongeBob at the concert.

Mr. Krabs hires Patrick and SpongeBob to wrestle so he can get the $1,000,000. However Patrick and SpongeBob are losing when they have fun instead of wrestling. However the undefeated champions are defeated by Patrick's "iron butt". Mr. Krabs thought Patrick and SpongeBob lost, but then he hears that SpongeBob and Patrick won the $1,000,000. However the next choice is to go to wrestle camp. Patrick and SpongeBob choose wrestle camp and Mr. Krabs doesn't get the money, much to his dismay.

The Mermaidman and Barnacleboy Trading Cards are on sale! So SpongeBob goes to the bank to take out money, but keeps on asking for unscathed dollar bills, so he is kicked out. He finds Patrick at the comic book store where Patrick is trying to buy a book on counting. SpongeBob buys his pack of cards, but when the comic book clerk shows him the rare Mermaidman and Barnacle Boy animated Trading card #54, SpongeBob decides to try to find the card, but is forced to search all the card packs, and finds none. Patrick gives up on the counting book and buys the very last card pack and finds the rare card to SpongeBob's surprise. Chaos happens when SpongeBob tries to prevent the animated card from being ruined by Patrick. Eventually Patrick lets SpongeBob have the card, but asks SpongeBob is he can borrow it for the rest of the day to SpongeBob's dismay. Eventually the card falls into pieces, but Patrick reveals that the pack he bought contained all 5 Mermaidman and Barnacle Boy talking cards, and he lets SpongeBob have all of them.

• At dinnertime, the card (Number 655) exploded when Mermaidman said "Fortune!" when mustard was on the card.
• NOTE: The clerk says there are only 5 animated cards in existence, but then Patrick is found to have 5 in his pack and then the store has one on display, so probably the clerk was lying so that SpongeBob would buy more of the cards.

Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy are signing comic books, but SpongeBob cannot go because he has boating school. Before he will be in big trouble, he will sneak out the window, go to get his comic book signed and go back to class. However, after getting his autograph, SpongeBob finds that getting back to boating school proves harder than he thought. The day turns sour when SpongeBob becomes racked with guilt about ditching class. SpongeBob's guilt is further strengthened when he finds out that Dale (one of Mrs. Puff's old students) turned to crime after ditching, and now it is a race back to school before the day ends. In the end, SpongeBob gets to boating school, however, Mrs. Puff is arrested for avoiding jury duty.

When SpongeBob and Patrick get curious about why Squidward is always happy once every month, they see Squidward walk out of his house and they follow him to a secret society Squidward is a member of called "The Cephalopod Lodge". SpongeBob and Patrick sneak inside the lodge to see what Squidward is doing, but they only get Squidward kicked out of the lodge, when the members find that they had followed him and when the members blame it all on Squidward. When Squidward gets upset over being kicked out SpongeBob and Patrick try to convince the Lodge leader that it wasn't Squidward's fault, although when Patrick unintentionally insults the leader, Squidward remains banned for life. SpongeBob and Patrick then cheer him up by making a fancy secret club of their own, although instead annoys and angers Squidward, especially when they make a "secret handshake"; chanting the well-known nursery rhyme Pat-a-Cake and when they make him use a jellyfish to sting his tongue in order to join their secret club, which are similar to the Cephalopod Lodge's ways of joining the lodge. Eventually SpongeBob and Patrick give up on their club idea and they make a plan to get Squidward's Cephalopod Lodge membership back. SpongeBob and Patrick disguise themselves as an eel using a large sock and plan that they'll scare the Lodge members and when they give the signal Squidward will defeat the "eel" and the members will reward Squidward his membership back. However the plan fails because when Squidward is given back his membership SpongeBob and Patrick come out of the sock to congratulate him, and they are kicked out again. However things go worse for Squidward when SpongeBob and Patrick make Squidward sting his tongue again to pass the "initiation" for their club...

Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy are booked to attend a shuffleboarding tournament, but they can’t go because they’re laid up in the hospital, so SpongeBob and Patrick offer to dress up as the superhero duo and attend in their place. But instead of just simply attending the shuffleboarding tournament, SpongeBob and Patrick decide that while they are dressed up as Mermaidman and Barnacleboy, they might as well act like they are the heroes, and send almost everyone in Bikini Bottom to the local jail, mostly for ridiculous reasons. They end up overfilling the jail and it bursts. The recently released prisoners think that the disguised SpongeBob and Patrick were the real Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy, and angrily chase them. SpongeBob and Patrick get rid of their disguises before the angry mob notices, thus leaving the real Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy with a lot of "trouble on their hands".

So, SpongeBob tries to take turns going through each of the events, and gets very mixed up. In the end, Mr. Krabs, Sandy and Patrick all understand the situation and Sandy reveals that her invention was in fact a cloning machine, and duplicates SpongeBob twice. She then says that he now can be in three places at once, but SpongeBob falls asleep before he hears this.

Patrick is unhappy because he knows when either SpongeBob or Squidward have their Krusty Krab Hats on, then that means that they're going to work, so Patrick gets a job at the Krusty Krab and also get a hat. When he finally receives a hat, he repeatedly falls down (at which according to him, he gets nervous sometimes), which seem to attract more tourists for Mr. Krabs, so he gives Patrick the job of providing entertainment for the day, resulting in Patrick repeatedly getting both injured and publicly humiliated. Later when Patrick is supposed to fall into a bucket of sea urchins (while he's up on a diving board), he gives Squidward his hat so it doesn't get ripped up, but now he can't fall, after they both fall down (Squidward falls over Patrick, Patrick falls after he put on his hat again), but don't get seriously injured. SpongeBob then realizes that it's been the hat that's been weighing him down, not nervousness. Despite Mr. Krabs explicitly stating that there are no refunds, the customers, enraged that no one got maimed, forcibly take their money back from Mr. Krabs, as well as stealing the clothes off his back. Mr. Krabs blames Patrick for ruining his business and fires him, vowing that Patrick will never work for him again. However, SpongeBob allows Patrick to wear his hat any time Patrick wants. The episode ends with Patrick repeatedly falling over again.
