Indonesia merupakan salah satu negara yang kaya akan spesies ikan air tawar. Indonesia berada pada posisi ke-3 sebagai negara dengan spesies ikan air tawar terbanyak di dunia, dengan total spesies mencapai 1155 spesies.
Untuk jumlah spesies ikan air tawar endemik, Indonesia memiliki total 440 spesies ikan air tawar endemik, berada di posisi ke-4, setelah Brazil (1716 spesies), China (888) dan Amerika Serikat (593 spesies).
