The reason for the decline since 2007 is mainly that a new railway shortcut LahtiKerava was opened September 2006, which considerably shortened the railway travel time to Helsinki, and cause the Helsinki route to close. In 2010, Ryanair started flights to Lappeenranta, its second destination in Finland after Tampere. The airport gets a large number of Russian passengers who use the low cost flights provided by Ryanair.[4]
