Reason: Taklamakan Desert is mostly uninhabited and should be in grey instead of yellow as if it is a Mandarin speaking area. Compare to the more rational perspective on a different topic here: File:Ethnolinguistic_map_of_China_1983.png, where the deep desert and mountain fastness is shown as uninhabited.
