Bhumibol memerintah dengan seorang wakil raja hingga tahun 1950 dan naik takhta sebagai Raja Rama IX. Kepemimpinannya mendapat tempat di hati rakyat karena sentuhan-sentuhan pribadinya. Penggemar musik jazz dan lagu kontemporer, ia memperoleh anggota kehormatan dari Institut Musik dan Seni Wina ([[Austria]]). Ia selalu memberi waktu untuk menyerahkan diploma pada setiap lulusan universitas negeri di [[Thailand]]. Tugasnya itu kemudian diambil alih oleh putra-putri raja.

 

 

Ketika berolahraga jalan kaki di sekitar istana pada [[24 Juni]] [[2006]], raja terjatuh. Akibatnya terjadi keretakan di [[tulang iga]], memar-memar pada punggung dan pundak. Kejadian ini turut menurunkan kesehatan raja yang juga telah menderita sumsum tulang belakang pada [[1995]]. Kondisi itu didiagnosis sebagai penyakit tulang belakang yang terjepit pada [[2003]] dan raja telah mendapatkan terapi fisik penyembuhan sejak tahun [[2005]]. Pada [[20 Juni]] [[2006]], Raja masuk Rumah Sakit Siraraj di Bangkok untuk menjalani operasi tulang belakang dan ia datang bersama permaisuri Ratu [[Sirikit]], empat anaknya, dan para cucu.
