Karena di Luar Angkasa tidak terpengaruh gaya gravitasi, maka fragmentasi ledakan akan melaju terus. Hal ini akan menjadi sangat berbahaya untuk pesawat antartiksa, karena fragmentasi ledakan tersebut bisa bertabrakan dengan pesawat dan menimbulkan kerusakan. Sampah luar angkasa berbeda beda bentuk dan jenis ukurannya, ada yang berukuran besar, ada pula yang berukuran sangat kecil.
Ada banyak sampah di luar angkasa dari yang berukuran 1 cm hingga 15 cm. Partikel ini bergerak dengan kecepatan lebih dari 20,000 mil per jam, dan bisa bertahan lama melaju di luar angkasa, hingga pada akhirnya jatuh akibat daya tarik gravitasi bumi, dan terbakar oleh atmosfer.
