Ladd lahir dengan nama Cheryl Jean Stoppelmoor di Huron, South Dakota merupakan puteri ke dua dari Dolores (née Katz), seorang karyawan, dan Marion Stoppelmoor (1929–2001), seorang insinyur kereta api.[1] Dia menikah dengan sesama aktor David Ladd, dan dikaruniai seorang puteri, Jordan.[2] Dia menggnakan nama aslinya, di mana dia menyembunyikan setelah perceraian mereka.
