Tidak tau juga, tapi saya pernah lihat subtitle di Trans TV hacker diartikan peretas. Arkwatem 13:13, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

Istilah ini merupakan terjemahan baku dari pemerintah untuk hacker. Kalau mau menengok asal katanya berasal dari kata "retas" yang berarti "putus atau terbuka benang jahitannya" (Kamus Bahasa Indonesia Kontemporer, edisi I, 1991). Untuk kata "peretas" berdasarkan makna awalnya adalah

1. n tindakan awal untuk meretas sesuatu
2. orang yang meretas jalan.

retas juga memiliki makna lain, yaitu n "tubuh pada batuan beku yang menerobos dengan cara memotong batuan lain." dalam entri di ms], retas diartikan "toreh dengan senjata tajam". ang 13:33, 11 April 2007 (UTC)
