Translation kick-off
suntingHi, everyone!
First of all, thank you so much for volunteering to coordinate the translations for this year's fundraiser. Your help is extremely valuable, and much appreciated!
So, let me give you a short overview of the process we want to have this year. The idea is to build up a team of translators for each language, headed by a translation coordinator (that's you guys) who oversees that stuff is done. The team will ideally have three kinds of contributors (which can be overlapping): coordinator(s), translators and quality checkers. Quality checker is like a proofreader, only a bit more - not only proofreading for typos and so on, but also making sure that the translation is of good quality; e.g. that it makes sense in your language and that it is truthful to the original. More on this in another mail.
The reason we want this structure is to ease the workload on the individual contributor, and to get high-quality translations. I realize that for some smaller languages it can be quite hard to find people who are willing to help translate. (For some countries people in the projects say that there's no point in translating the fundraiser since no-one or very few will donate anyways - if that is a problem for your project, direct people to this spreadsheet which shows how much was made from each country last year.)
Now, the thing we want your help with is to (a) find people who can translate and quality check, and (b) make sure that these things get done in time for publication. You are of course welcome to translate yourself if you feel like it, but having other people to help with that would be a huge plus.
Anyways, the first two pages for translation are already ready, and you can start with them. They are probably the most important, so it's good to get an early start with them. They are:
- Core messages (messages that are shown on most pages in the fundraiser, which is quite important, yet simple, to get translated)
- Jimmy Letter 001 (this one is almost identical to this 2010 appeal, so if that one is translated to your language you can use that as a base)
Now finally; this list is set so that your replies will go to the person you reply to and not to the list. This is done intentionally so that the list will be as low-traffic as possible. If you do want to send a message to the entire list, add fr-translations@lists.wikimedia.org to the recipients. And if you have any questions at all, don't hesitate to ask!
Good translating! :-)
