Penguin Books
Penguin Books adalah penerbit dari Britania Raya. Penerbit ini didirikan tahun 1935 oleh Sir Allen Lane dan saudaranya, Richard dan John,[2] sebagai anak penerbit The Bodley Head, lalu membentuk perusahaan terpisah satu tahun kemudian.[3] Penguin mengubah industri penerbitan pada tahun 1930-an dengan mengeluarkan buku sampul lunak murah yang dijual di Woolworths dan toko-toko besar. Berkat mereka, masyarakat luas bisa menikmati karya fiksi dan nonfiksi sampul lunak berkualitas tinggi.[4] Kesuksesan Penguin menunjukkan bahwa buku-buku serius memiliki segmen pembaca yang besar. Penguin juga memiliki pengaruh besar terhadap perbincangan publik di Britania Raya karena buku-bukunya membahas budaya, politik, seni, dan sains.[5]

Penguin Books kini merupakan imprin Penguin Random House, konglomerat baru yang dibentuk tahun 2013 melalui merger dengan penerbit Random House dari Amerika Serikat.[6] Sebelumnya, Penguin Group sepenuhnya dimiliki oleh Pearson PLC, perusahaan media global dari Britania Raya yang juga memiliki Financial Times.[7] Namun, dalam perusahaan induk yang baru ini, Penguin Group hanya memegang 25% saham perusahaan. Perusahaan media asal Jerman, Bertelsmann, adalah pemegang saham terbesar. Penguin Books adalah salah satu penerbit berbahasa Inggris terbesar yang tergabung dalam grup "Lima Besar".
