Selwyn R. Cudjoe
Selwyn Cudjoe (lahir 1 Desember 1943)[1] adalah akademikus, ilmuwan, sejarawan, eseis, editor berkebangsaan Trinidad yang menjadi profesor Kajian Afrika di Wellesley College. Dia juga menjadi guru besar di Margaret E. Deffenbaugh dan LeRoy T. Carlson dalam bidang Perbandingan Sastra, dan profesor ilmu sejarah di Marion Butler McClean.[2][3] Salah satu keahliannya adalah sastra Karibia dan sejarah intelektual Karibia, dan dia mengajar pelatihan tradisi sastra Afrika-Amerika, sastra Afrika, perempuan penulis kulit hitam, dan sastra Karibia.[2]

Life and career
suntingSelwyn Reginald Cudjoe lahir di Tacarigua, Trinidad, seperti beberapa generasi keluarganya,[4][5] tumbuh di perkebunan gula yang nenek moyangnya merupakan pekerja keras.[6] Orangtuanya adalah Lionel R. dan Carmen Rose Cudjoe;[1] his kakek buyutnya, Jonathon Cudjoe, lahir di Tacarigua tahun 1833, tahun terakhir berlakunya perbudakan, dan nenek buyutnya, Amelia, lahir di desa yang sama pada tahun 1837.[4][7]
Cudjoe menempuh pendidikan di Tacarigua EC School,[5] sebelum berimigrasi ke Amerika Serikat pada tahun 1964, pada usia 21 tahun. Dia melanjutkan sekolah di Universitas Fordham, dan meraih gelar B.A. jurusan bahasa Inggris(1969) serta M.A. jurusan Sastra Amerika (1972). Dia juga berkuliah di Universitas Columbia (1971–72), dan segera meraih gelar Ph.D. dalam bidang Kesusastraan Amerika dari Universitas Cornell(1976).[2] Dia mengajar di Ithaca College dan Cornell, Harvard, Brandeis, Fordham, dan Universitas Ohio, sebelum bergabung dengan Wellesley College tahun 1986. Cudjoe juga menjadi pengajar di Auburn State Prison dan Bedford-Stuyvesant Youth-In-Action.[2]
Dia menjabat sebagai Direktur Bang Central Trinidad dan Tobago dan sebagai Presiden di National Association for the Empowerment of African People (Trinidad dan Tobago).[2][8][9][10][11]
