Nama asli Phryne adalah '''Mnēsarétē''' (Μνησαρέτη, "memperingati kebajikan"), namun karena kulitnya yang kekuningan ia disebut '''Phrýnē''' ("[[Katak puru]]").<ref name="plutarch1" /> Ini adalah nama panggilan yang sering diberikan kepada pelacur dan prostitusi lainnya juga.<ref name="havelock1" /> Ia lahir sebagai putri Epikles di [[Thespiai]], [[Boiotia]], namuntetapi hidup di [[Athena (kota)|Athena]].<ref name="athenaeus" /> Tanggal pasti kelahiran dan kematiannya tidak diketahui, namuntetapi ia lahir pada sekitar tahun 371 SM.
